JULIUS ERVING

OUR ICON

Julius Winfield Erving Il, known by the nickname “Dr. J”, helped launch a modern style of basketball that emphasized athletic play above the rim. Erving helped legitimize the now defunct (ABA). As some players are considered to be “the team”, Dr. J was considered to be “the league”. He was the undisputed face of the ABA and their new brand of basketball, when the ABA-NBA merger occurred after the 1976 season.

Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles while playing with the ABA’s Virginia Squires and New York Nets and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in scoring, with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined). Julius is most well-known for his artistry above the rim concluding with his patented slam dunk. Generations later, players are still trying to imitate that iconic dunk from the free throw line, which he executed on his way to winning the ABA’s Slam Dunk Contest in 1976.

Erving was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. Erving is known as a dignified and gracious individual who truly understands what it means to be an ambassador to the game of basketball. While a player, he understood the responsibility of being seen as the “Doctor” and didn’t disappoint game in and game out. Today, he remains one of the most cherished players around the game and is respected by players and coaches both past and present.
